Cameos have held my attention for many years. The technique of traditional cameos involves relief carving into stone; usually a romantic image of a silhouette. I have wanted to include a modern version of this heirloom in my collection and did so two seasons ago. It occurred to me that if we carved an original image in wax, that we could make a reverse of that image into a mold and fill it with clay. The pieces that evolved from this technique are more akin to Lava Cameos from Italy. The imagery comes from early Egyptian jewelry and the pendants and earrings in our collection reflect my love of antique ideas reinterpreted in a modern way.
Thanks to The Sunday Times Style section editor Jessica Diamond, our Bird in Hand earrings are part of her article on the cameo's modern make-over.
