MATERIALS AND STYLE

Why do you work in bronze?
Bronze dates back to 3500 BC. It is historically significant in the development of civilization. I was drawn to bronze because it is used by many contemporary sculptors, not only to make art but also to make artisan jewelry. While it is not considered a precious metal, it has a unique luster that is similar to gold when polished. It is simultaneously rich and humble. While my jewelry inspiration comes from many sources it is heavily influenced by modern art, architecture, furniture, and decorative arts from the mid-century. Bronze is a material that is part of that design period and tradition.

Does your jewelry contain nickel and what is a nickel allergy?
Our jewelry does not contain nickel. Many people break out in a rash in response to nickel.

What does artisan jewelry mean?
Artisan is a term for a skilled craft worker who makes or creates jewelry partly or entirely by hand as opposed to mechanized factory manufacturing. Our designs involve many processes and materials and our approach to creating a collection is more akin to creating an art show rather than working from a precision bench jewelers approach.

What is studio jewelry?
Studio jewelry was term that applied to artists making jewelry that often used unconventional materials, sometimes of little value and juxtaposing it with different metals. Popularly used to describe sculptural jewelry from the 1930's -1960's that tended to be one of a kind or limited edition. This method of working is very similar to what we do in our studio.

What is "demi-fine jewelry"?
It is any piece that falls between costume jewelry and finer high end jewelry.

What materials do you use?
We use bronze, sterling silver, semi precious stones, and pearls.

Is every piece unique?
At Julie Cohn Design, we use several different processes to create our designs. All pieces are limited edition. Some of the techniques we use are casting, hand forging, and hand fabricating. All of our designs are finished in our studio in Dallas, TX.

JEWELRY CARE

How do you care for the jewelry?
We use a special finish on our bronze pieces, which protects them from tarnishing and discoloring your skin. We recommend using a clean cloth to restore luster on the pieces. Do not use any chemical or polishing solutions on the jewelry. Store your jewelry in a dry place away from water and moisture. Occasionally, the bronze will begin to tarnish depending on your environment. If this happens, please return to Julie Cohn Design and we will refinish your jewelry at no charge to you. Please email us at juliecohndesign@gmail.com for repair instructions.

Are your pieces plated?
No.
